Waldkindergartens (Forest Schools) originated in Germany, spreading to Denmark, Sweden and the United Kingdom.  They are early-education schools for children aged 2-7.  Children learn through direct interaction with nature, which offers spontaneous and organic experiences.  Through these hands-on explorations children have the opportunity to achieve and develop self-confidence.

Outdoor learning fosters resiliency, independence and creativity.  Research has shown that children better retain information, have longer attention spans and improved self-control when learning through hands-on discovery. No matter what the weather, children are encouraged to play and explore the natural surroundings with adult supervision.  It is a learner-based approach where adults assist rather than lead in learning.
